The Day in which all Pelham Lab Graduates came back to meet there old teachers tell new students about the life after High School
This past January 11th was Alumni Day at Pelham Lab High School. Alumni Day was an opportunity for the past graduates of PLHS to come back to their former high school and meet the new students. There were a variety of graduates from past years here. They had the ability to roam the halls where they once walked and even go to the classrooms to speak with the students whom they were once in the shoes of. I had the opportunity to speak with and gain advice from a few of them. The first alumni whom I had the pleasure of speaking with was Nicholas Ramsingh who graduated from Pelham Lab in 2017 and graduated from John Jay College with a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology in 2021. He spoke a little bit about the transition from high school and college into actual adulthood. “It’s different,” he said. Many of the graduates emphasized the fact that life after high school does not get easier and does in fact get harder. “I never really realized until after high school that you guys are literally being spoon-fed right now,” said Vashtie Ramnauth, a 2020 PLHS graduate. Ramnauth is a junior at Mercy College with a major in nursing. Vashtie shared that she was a Nursing Assistant at NYU and shared some tips about building a resume. “Extracurriculars are important to put on your resume,” she said.
I think it’s safe to say that PLHS really affected the “adult” lives of these graduates. “Ask for help. I cannot stress that enough. All they want to do is help you guys,” said Betsy Roman, a 2022 PLHS graduate. These graduates also gave some valuable advice about how to stay on track in high school. Roman, a PLHS Class of 2022 graduate, shared that she was slacking off in high school and was close to not graduating. She shared the ways in which she picked up on her work and made it to graduation. “Don’t procrastinate,” said Roman, and “manage your time,” said Ramsingh. Alumni Day was an enriching experience and I am so thankful to these graduates for sharing their lives with us and feeding us such valuable advice.
